Uses for a
GPS tracker
What is a GPS tracker? It is a unit which, when connected to a
GPS system relays the location by radio or other means to a base
system so that the person on the receiving end can locate it on
a map. In fact, it is an idea which has already been seen in the
movie industry, but which now can become reality, as the
possibility to build a low cost GPS tracker has now become
commonplace.
There are various web sites which detail how a GPS tracker can
be built, using some very commonplace components, and which can
transmit, by FM radio, the location to an FM receiver. It is
assumed, of course that the FM receiver is connected to a
computer, with a map, which can then pinpoint the units location
to a specific street.
One possible use for this would be as a deterrent against car
theft. Cars could be fitted with a GPS tracker, and then located
via a central receiving station. Of course, there would need to
be a network of aerials to receive the FM transmissions which
might make the project slightly cost prohibitive by today’s
standards, but even so, some limited location could be performed
without too much expense.
Child location services, on the other hand, can take advantage
of the fact that the child is not supposed to wander as far as a
vehicle could. Fitting a cell phone with a GPS tracker, for
example, could also increase the range since it is a wide area
communication technology that only uses low power. This is the
principle driving force behind commercialization of GPS tracking
devices.
