How to protect
your hiking supplies
When walking, riding or driving around in the great outdoors,
you will often want to find a way to protect your hiking
supplies. If anything were to happen to them, you would probably
find yourself in a difficult, not to say, dangerous, position,
and so protecting hiking supplies becomes an investment. In
fact, it is an investment that can be as important as the
supplies themselves.
For example, should foodstuffs get wet, the vast majority of
them will become useless. The exceptions being, of course, those
items in tins, packets, and cheese. The only problem is that,
when packing your hiking supplies, one tends to shy away from
bulky packaging and tin cans, for both space and weight reasons.
So, a principle ingredient in your list of hiking supplies is
going to be waterproof boxes. Something like Tupperware is a
good investment, since it is watertight in both directions,
although some vacuum packing solutions are also good. The idea
is that anything that might get damaged if wet, excluding
clothes, goes into a little package all of its own.
An ultralight backpacker will shy away from this, as it will
make for a lot of bulk, and the best that they can hope for is
to protect everything with a waterproof covering. The advantage
is that if it rains, their hiking supplies are still protected
and it forms a lightweight bundle. The disadvantage is that if
one thing gets wet, so will everything else.
The end solution will always be a trade off between protecting
your valuable hiking supplies, and keeping a lightweight bundle
on your shoulders.
