Buying a rechargable flashlights

The advantage of rechargable flashlights is clear – no more batteries. But, you need to be aware that they are also more expensive to purchase than their alkaline powered equivalents. There are also two different kinds of battery that can power rechargable flashlights, nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd or NiCad) and Ni-Mh. The difference between the two is that the NiCad batteries need to be fully discharged before they can be recharged, or they begin to lose their capacity to hold a charge.

The batteries in NiMh rechargable flashlights do not suffer from this problem, but are more expensive. They are usually the ones used in modern dockable power tools of the kind that can be placed in a cradle so that they are always on charge.

Of course, there is nothing to stop you buying a regular flashlight, and using regular NiMh batteries with it – presto, you have rechargable flashlights! But this approach will not be as effective as a flashlight that is designed to be rechargeable from the ground up.

The principle reason that this is the case is that rechargable flashlights use a high intensity bulb which is more efficient than a standard one, and therefore wastes less charge. In a regular flashlight this might not be the case, as alkaline batteries generally supply more power, and therefore the manufacturer does not have to be as selective over which kind of bulb to use.

Finally, there is a new variety of rechargable flashlights which use human mechanical force to keep the charge up, which alleviates the dependency on electricity.
