Various kinds
of rechargeable flashlights
Since the advent of the battery charger, various types of
rechargeable flashlights have come onto the market. Each one has
its advantages and disadvantages, some of them shared by all
kinds of rechargeable flashlights, others specific to styles and
brands.
The first question that needs to be asked is where the
flashlight is going to be used. Since rechargeable flashlights
need to be charged in some way before use, they might not be
appropriate for a camping holiday, for example, where access to
electricity is not guaranteed.
If it is for camping, then choosing from the available
rechargeable flashlights which can be connected to a car battery
via the cigarette lighter is an absolute must. If you are
planning to take it away into the hills overnight, then be sure
that it can accept regular batteries too, and take some spares
along. This does, however, defeat the object of a rechargeable
flashlight somewhat.
A far better solution is to find a flashlight which can be
charged in a fashion which does not rely on electricity.
Rechargeable flashlights of this kind come in two flavors, those
which offer mechanical, on demand lighting, and those which have
an internal capacitor which charges up from either sunlight, or
by being cranked by turning a handle.
Finally, it is worth pointing out that not all rechargeable
flashlights are created equal, and that they are generally
weaker in lighting power than regular flashlights. They can
usually be upgraded, however, by fitting a more powerful bulb,
but this can reduce the time that they can be used from a single
charge.
