The wall
tent revolution
For those of you who have been camping in a small nylon micro
tent, the wall tent will be a revelation. Rather than trying to
make do with a tent that is about 1 meter high, the wall tent is
shaped more like a house. It has, as the name implies, walls
which can be anywhere up to a meter and a half high.
This means that a wall tent gives you more overall space, which
makes it nicer to live inside, even if it is only temporarily.
On the other hand, it does make it more difficult to heat, due
to the larger area, and volume. So, either heavier sleeping
bags, or a portable heater will be needed to make sure that you
remain comfortable in slightly colder climates.
One use for a wall tent is as a place to eat or congregate
whilst on a camping holiday. It is simply more comfortable for
people to be able to stand under the tent rather than crawl
around on their hands and knees. So, it becomes a viable
alternative to a caravan or similar home away from home.
The best place to use a wall tent is on a public campsite. They
do not tend to pack up very small, so carrying them in a
backpack will probably not be possible, unless the load can be
spread around many people. The chances are good, however, that
you will be able to fit enough people inside the tent to make
this a viable option.
