What to look
for in womens hiking boots
Choosing a pair of womens hiking boots shares a lot in common
with choosing a pair from the ranges of mens boots available.
After all, the same principles apply, and the same feature list
available. When buying womens hiking boots, you need them to be
waterproof, lightweight, solid, and have a good tread – nothing
really different than what you look for in a mens equivalent.
Still, most hiking boot manufacturers tend to offer a range of
womens hiking boots with the premise that they need more support
around the ankles, must have a more cushioned sole, and be
generally better than mens boots. Whether this is pandering to
popular stereotypes, or trying to appeal to the mass market is
unclear, but as an advertising ploy it might work.
However, choosing womens hiking boots is a simple exercise of
analyzing what it is that you want from a boot, and choosing one
appropriate. Generally speaking, of you want a boot that will be
supple, and yet tough, then you will be looking for a leather or
leather and suede combination.
Waterproofing is also important, and womens hiking boots have
varieties with Gore-Tex uppers, which is better than just
spraying the boot with a waterproof covering. Gore-Tex is a
breathable fabric, which means that your foot will also perspire
less whilst hiking.
For a good climbing and walking combination, there are often
ranges of womens hiking boots which are more lightweight and
flexible than others. They still have all the other features
such as a good tread, and waterproofing, but might be more
appropriate for the ladies.
