Differences between daypacks and backpacks

Daypacks are best when you are going out for a short while, and do not take much in the way of supplies with you. Daypacks are smaller, more compact packs, but with most, if not all of, the attributes of a regular backpack. Where to avoid any misunderstanding is by thinking that backpacks do not have to protect as much as other forms of packs, because this is not true.

So, if daypacks need to have the same features as other packs, what should those features include. For a start they should be watertight. Not actually completely waterproof, but enough so that the contents do not get wet if it should rain. The reason is because you will tend to put things in your daypack that should not get wet, but without the possibility to protect them with other pieces of equipment.

Daypacks are not big enough, for example, to wrap up the contents in little protective packets, and so should be water resistant to a certain degree. Part of the reason for using a daypack is that you do not want to have the weight of a full pack, possibly because you are a casual leisure walker, as opposed to a seasoned trekker.

There are also tourism daypacks, which are aimed at those using the pack for vacation sightseeing, and these need to have additional features, such as pockets which are easy to get to, and can contain cell phones or wallets, but which are hard to steal from.
