Torches – for emergencies and
to light your way
Virtually every household has a
couple torches (flashlights) on hand for emergencies – at least
one in the house, and another in the car. With the latest concerns
that we will need to be prepared for power cuts on a regular
basis, there’s always room to have another couple of torches on
hand – they are far safer than candles after all.
Torches are available in all
shapes and sizes - from emergency roadside beacons to some of the
smallest possible merchandise. Some of the tiniest ones are
positioned with pen points to provide non-intrusive light – to
enable you to write in the dark. Some car key and key ring
manufacturers have incorporated them into key rings so that you
will never have to fumble around in the dark to fit the key again.
With the advent of LED lighting, the humble torch has taken on a
new lease of life as “mobile lighting” – relying on battery and/or
solar energy to fuel.
However, most use conventional
batteries - from AAA to D - which usually fit into the body of the
torch. The cost of conventional torches has fallen dramatically
over the past several years – it’s now possible to pick up one up
for little more than the cost of a candy bar. And in a remote
wilderness, they provide a level of comfort and security that
you’ll want to take along. There’s no doubt that they are an
essential tool for any camping adventure – to light your path, to
find your gear in a pitch dark tent or to act as a beacon - so
don’t leave home without one, or even two, in your pack.
