Survival knives
are not just for backwoodsmen
In the house, most knives belong
in the kitchen. Out of doors, good survival knives are worth their
weight in gold – as long as you know how to use them safely.
Survival knives have hollowed out handles which are used to store
emergency equipment. You may choose one with just the basics or go
for one with a few extras. Regardless of which you choose at a
minimum they should have matches in a watertight container and a
compass. Many, if not most, include a fishing hook and line as
well. Some come with a sewing kit and or even have a saw cable.
Don’t be put off by the look of
survival knives (including those which tie down the end on your
leg). Those long serrated blades make cutting much easier – which
of course is why bread knives have serrated edges. In the
wilderness, whether it’s cleaning fish, ripping rope or sawing
wood they will make a real difference when you are “roughing it”.
You may even want to look for double-edged options if you are
really handy with a knife. Remember to bring along a sharpening
stone to keep it in tiptop form.
As they say – “Guns don’t kill
people – people kill people” the same holds true for survival
knives. Not knowing good survival skills has cost more than one
life – and whether by accident or design, improper use of good
equipment can ruin the perfect vacation. Take the time to learn
how to use them properly and your equipment will help keep you
safe. And needless to say, it’s your responsibility to ensure that
you abide by the laws wherever you travel.
