Outdoor wear that’s as perfect around town as it is in Mother Nature’s backyard

Today you can find outdoor wear that’s as stylish to wear around town as it is hardwearing and comfortable to take on any adventure. The key to your comfort is layering your clothes, as it’s the air trapped between layers which keeps you warm, so several thin layers are warmer than one thick layer. From the skin outwards, you’ll want to invest in outdoor wear which is breathable and help whisk moisture away from the body – and for this, natural fabrics are best.

Bear in mind that your body temperature will change according to the level of activity that you undertake – and when you become inactive, you will cool down quickly. You can find specialised outdoor wear for specific activities – as well as for general use. You’ll want to cover your head, hands and feet, where 90% of body heat is lost. Layering helps you adjust to these changes very quickly – and thinking about the layers as a series of four basic levels will help guide you to making the right choices.

Next to your skin, you’ll want a thermal layer – close fitting, stretchy and covering from your toes to your finger tips and neck in cool weather or when you are inactive. The next layer is relatively close fitting – again, using breathable material to help take any moisture produced by your exertions away from the body. The third level is where you adjust your level of warmth – fleeces are ideal for this purpose – this is the layer that helps you adjust your body temperature. The outmost layer needs to be both wind and waterproof – and again, depending on conditions can range from a thin waterproof to a down filled jacket. Remember that it’s easier to cool down rather than warm up and your choice of outdoor wear will help make perfect memories.
