Whether you're boiling up some soup or sautéing that fresh-caught fish, a backpacking stove is an efficient, lightweight piece of outdoor gear

A backpacking stove is an essential item of equipment. These compact little units run on a variety of compressed gas fuels including butane, propane and isobutane. Liquid automotive fuels like unleaded gas and kerosene are also popular due to worldwide availability. Other liquids such as white gas and denatured alcohol are also used as fuels, though they are generally harder to find outside North America. The fuel stores in a pressurized cylinder or canister that attaches to the burner either directly or via a hose. Compressed-gas stoves do not require priming while liquid fuel models do. Liquid fuels perform better in cold temperatures. Below freezing, a compressed-gas stove will lose efficiency. Some models will run on multiple types of fuel, a very handy feature to have.

Take some time to think about the way you'll be using your stove. Backpackers should choose the lightest and most compact stove they can afford. Some models fold up or collapse -- one even stows inside your cookware. It's easier and less bulky to carry a stoves if the fuel container is designed to detach. Stoves should be simple to set up and light. They should be well-balanced and stable with a pot on them. An important feature is the ability to control the flame down to a simmer. Accessories include maintenance kits and windscreens.

There's nothing like a hot meal after a hard day on the trail. You'll be glad to own a stove when all the firewood is wet!
