Find your way using gps navigation

If even the thought of having to find your way to a new place using a map or a set of typed directions makes you nervous, be grateful to the US Department of Defense. Their global positioning system (GPS) has mapped virtual every spot on earth. Commercial use of gps navigation have moved from the large industrial users (avionics, marine, transports) to personal usage – and is changing the shape of travel – whether by car, by boat or even on foot. Wherever you need to go, from across town to across the country, you can make sure you stay on the right track using gps navigation.

Most in-vehicle systems let you plot your course across country using major routes, then switch to city street maps as you make your way towards your destination. There are gps navigation systems which tell you how far to the next turn and which way you’ll be turning – others simply give you an audible bleep. Even on water, the combination of tidal information with the mapping of the coastline will ensure that you can avoid grounding to a halt.

Hand held gps navigation systems include similar information and can be used for traveling in town as well as the remote wilderness, incorporating topographical features, compass, route markers, rate of travel, time of arrival estimates, even the ability to return to your starting point by retracing your foot-steps. If you thought map reading, course plotting is difficult, then you are in for a treat – some even let you print out a copy (so you can leave a copy with a friend if you’re headed for a remote wilderness).
