Carry a lantern
to light the night
A lantern is one of those
essentials that you’ll want to have when you’re camping to light
your living area after dark. In many areas, open campfires are
banned, so you’ll want to ensure that you have something besides
your trusty flashlight to see by after the sun goes down, and a
lantern is the perfect choice. Some people prefer battery fuelled
lanterns to gas lanterns, just remember to bring some spare fresh
batteries and that rechargeable batteries tend to die very quickly
without warning. Many gas lanterns can use self-sealing fuel
canisters which make them easy to set up and use. Whichever one
you prefer, simply make sure you have enough fuel to last for you
entire adventure.
The major complaint about many
lanterns is the glare. Eyes soon get accustomed to the dark
without normal levels of light pollution so the bright light from
a lantern seems doubly strong at night. Look for shields which be
adjusted so that you can minimize your light pollution (other
campers will be grateful) and adjustable controls and filters
which will dim and brighten the light. Amber colored lanterns are
great for inside tents - they let you can see every thing you need
to find – without making temporary blind spots before your eyes.
These are great for using in the backyard as well if you’re doing
a bit of star spotting.
Family camping is far more
enjoyable if you can recreate that ‘round the campfire’ feeling
around a lantern to light the night. You may find even the little
ones stay awake – if only to spot the planets or gaze at the moon,
experiences which they’ll carry with them all their lives.
